How to Start a Blog Part 1: Starting From Scratch

How to start blogging

Starting a blog can be confusing and overwhelming. Six years ago, when I started my lifestyle & beauty blog, I knew absolutely nothing about blogs or blogging. I was just in love with reading them and I thought, I can do this! Now, 227 posts later, I’ve learned a ton about blogging. All I can say is that starting a blog can be extremely easy and fun. Let’s get started!

CONTENT IS KING
First things first, discover your blogging passion. As they (whoever they are) say, the best writers write what they know. Don’t write about the best ways to prepare exotic meats if you are a vegan, veggie loving chef. You will run out of things to say and in the long run your blog won’t be very successful because readers want to read from people who live, breath, and poop whatever niche they are playing in.

PLATFORM AND HOSTING
WordPress, Blogger, Squarespace. There are tons of blogging platforms. Some free and some not free. You can choose from many different layouts and themes. You’ll have to do some research on other blogs you like to see what kind of blog you want for yourself. This will depend a lot on your topic and of course what kind of content you wish to publish. You can find lots of free themes on WordPress, but the better ones will cost some extra dough. BluChic has some great premium themes that are geared toward women-run online businesses.

HOSTING & DOMAIN NAME
Once you figure out what kind of topic you want to focus on and which platform you prefer, your next step will be to decide on a hosting service and domain name. Finding a great domain name can take a while, but it’s worth it. I suggest you pick something brandable and easy to remember. Try to come up with a domain name that you can also use as your Social Media handle. Aligning your domain and social media is a crucial step. Bluehost is one of the best hosting services. I use it for all my online properties including this blog.

START POSTING
Write and publish. Write and publish. Use original images as much as possible. If you do use stock images, credit them well. Be consistent. Find your writing style and blogging voice. Don’t worry about feedback or comments. Just keep posting and be confident. As you create content, remember to revisit the layout and look of your blog. As your content grows, you’ll naturally want to expand the style of your blog as well. Maybe create your own logo, create tabs and categories. Have fun, it’s your blog!

SHARE
This will be the hardest part of being a new blogger – having the confidence to actually share your blog posts. It’s one thing to sit quietly and write. Who will notice? But the only way to grow your blog is to share your content. Start with friends and family on your personal Facebook page. Then once you have a few posts under your belt, create official social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Plus, etc. Don’t worry about scheduling or having a strategy at this point in the game, just focus on your content and share as much as possible.
