The first post in my series on How to Start a Blog, I talked about the first few steps in getting started including finding a niche for your blog. Giving your blog a focus in one area is important so that anyone visiting your site can quickly know what your blog is about and what to expect to see. If your topics span too many various areas and you post inconsistently, you’ll have a difficult time increasing traffic, gaining loyal readers and your bounce rate will be sky high. Visitors will come and go without returning. Focus on one niche area that you can confidently write on and do so consistently.
IDENTITY: When I first started my lifestyle and beauty blog, Like, Wutever, I don’t know that it was actually a fashion and beauty blog. I was no expert, in fact I’m still not, but it was an area that I was completely fascinated with. I kept on posting and writing and somewhere along the way, I learned to focus in and be consistent. Soon other beauty bloggers started leaving comments and asking for tips. It was so great to finally have an identity. I didn’t just have a blog, I had a fashion and beauty blog! Just like a company or a brand, you’re blog should have an identity too. It’s important for your readers to be able to identify your blog in their time of need. Whether they want to see what new products you’re trying or what shade of lipstick you’d suggest for a special occasion. Your readers will identify as the expert. This doesn’t mean you have six degrees and a Masters in this area. It means you’ve tried it and you have an honest opinion and experience that you want to share.
COMMUNITY: When you have a niche, it’s also easier to connect with other bloggers in your area. They’ll leave comments on your blog and follow you on social media. Those in the same niche as you will want to share your ideas and thoughts on the subject. When your community starts sharing your posts and links, your site will be exposed to more readers, your followers will increase and all the outbound links will also help with your Google ranking.
FOLLOWERS: When I didn’t have a niche, I could bring in traffic through individual posts but the giant variety of topics available on my blog didn’t keep them entertained long enough to follow. When I narrowed down my subject matter, visitors that came to read a product review would stick around to read a few other beauty-related posts. Then they would come back to read and comment on they next post and the next post. My topic was something they truly enjoyed and wanted to read and talk more about.
COIN: When you have a niche and are consistently posting on your blog, you’ll gain traffic. When you gain traffic, you’ll carve out loyal followers. Once this happens, businesses in the same niche as your blog, will find you. They’ll want to buy ad space on your blog because they know your readers will like their content, too. They’ll approach you for giveaways because your followers have shown an obvious interest in a particular subject based on what you write. Your readers get more involved because you’ll have even more content and great perks specialized just for them. A blog that you started as a hobby has now suddenly started making you a little coin money.
It’s so important to have a niche. With so many blogs out there today, you won’t get noticed for years unless you can show dedication to a topic that will attract dedicated readers. It’s a blog eat blog world out there. You’ve got to stand out!
