10 Questions with Robyn Baldwin, Work/Life Harmony Strategist

An Alpha Female is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a state of mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it.

I never heard of the term, “alpha female” until I came across Robyn Baldwin’s blog. I was scrolling through twitter on a week day during lunch and came across a tweet from Robyn. I do not remember what the tweet said or what enticed me to click on it. But when I did, it took me to her blog. She referred to herself as an “alpha female” which intrigued me to continue reading.

The first post that captured my attention was one in which Robyn spoke on getting back into her fitness routine after discovering she had multiple sclerosis. She had just started running again. I found it fascinating. I think because something like that would probably devastate any other person. But here Robyn was writing about it – being incredibly vulnerable and open, but strong and confident at the same time.

As an Alpha Female, Robyn Baldwin inspires others to tackle the world head on with positivity and enthusiasm while embracing ambition and staying healthy and happy. She helps people figure out what work/life harmony means to them.  She’s currently working on her first full-length book, Love Lost, Life Found. 

She’s also a former fitness bikini competitor and former CFL Cheerleader. She earned her Honours Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing before landing at Kobo as Senior Integrated Marketing Manager. Type A Alpha Females often come across as strong-willed and selfish. But what keeps me going back to Robyn’s blog each week is the vulnerability, openness and honesty she captures in her writing. I see it as a strength. Only the strongest people can be vulnerable.

1. In the beginning, what motivated you to become an entrepreneur?

I wouldn’t say I’m a true entrepreneur [yet] as I still love being part of the corporate world. I have my dream job selling books for a living as the Sr. Integrated Marketing Manager at Kobo (eReading company based in Toronto) and then explore the side hustling world as an Alpha Female & Fitness Personality. I started my blog at RobynBaldwin.com in 2009 when I started my fitness journey diving into the world of fitness competitions. From there I started growing my personal brand as an Alpha Female and have been able to monetize myself as a brand ambassador and freelance writer. I am a brand ambassador for companies like Magnum Nutraceuticals, Mizuno

I started my blog at RobynBaldwin.com in 2009 when I started my fitness journey diving into the world of fitness competitions. From there I started growing my personal brand as an Alpha Female and have been able to monetize myself as a brand ambassador and freelance writer. I am a brand ambassador for companies like Magnum Nutraceuticals, Mizuno Canada and 23 Degrees Roastery. I write for magazines like Natural Muscles, Max Sports & Fitness, Training & Fitness and iRun.

I’m working on my first full-length book; Love Lost, Life Found a self-development book of how on the quest for a perfect life I ended a toxic relationship and started a journey to find self-love and taught myself how to live life to the fullest.

2. What problem are you solving?

I’m a work/life harmony strategist and a happiness lover. I am solving in my life the age-old work/life balance stress that many people struggle with. I work full time, have a side hustle, have an amazing fitness and self-care plan in my life and I hope to help others with tips and tricks to de-stress. I have figured out how to have balance while going after my dreams and goals and spending time with those that mean the most to me. Through my book; Love Lost, Life Found I hope to help at least one woman heal after leaving a bad relationship or save one young girl from the heartache I went through.

3. What’s the biggest thing you struggle with as an entrepreneur?

How to monetize my knowledge. At the time of this interview I’m planning my 2016 side hustle goals around developing online challenges and courses to help teach others everything from work/life harmony to overcoming life obstacles with resilience to healing a broken heart.

4. What does a typical day consist of?

Get up at 5:00am. Go to the gym for a morning workout (weight or cardio) or spend 2 hours writing or answering emails. Full day in the office from 9:00am – 5:00pm. Lunch hour is spent checking in on my social media world and scheduling content. In the evening I work out at an obstacle course race training facility or I go home to write or relax. Rinse and Repeat!

5. What do you love to do at night?

I love training at my obstacle course race training facility for circuit training workouts or functional fitness. Once a week I try and go to yoga. I usually pair yoga with a dinner date with my best friend. Other nights you can find me out with my boyfriend either trying to find a healthy place to eat out at or cooking ourselves.

I participate in a weekly Twitter Chat once a week on Tuesday nights called #sidehustlechat and then one night a week I wind down and watch TV shows taped on the PVR. Every night before I sleep I have an Epsom salt bath while reading on my Kobo (shameless work plug).

Then I read a daily devotional, meditate and pray before laying my head down on the pillow.

6. How do you dress to exude confidence?

I wear comfortable dresses or well fitting ones that allow me to be professional but express some fashion sense. I wear slacks and blouses most days and then jeans and sweaters on Fridays. On weekends you can find me in athletic gear. I feel most confident when my mind is right and the clothing is just a nice accessory.

7. Yoga, strength training, cardio or all three?

Definitely all three. I strength train on my own 3 times a week. I usually do a leg, back and shoulder day. Two evenings a week I train at an obstacle course race training facility. I try my best to do yoga once a week and then I try and run 2 – 3x a week on my own.

8. How does your culture/background influence your work?

My grandfather and father were/are overachievers so they’ve raised one in me as well. My grandfather was the National Secretary of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs in Toronto (1938 – 1941) then he served in the Department of External Affairs during World War 2, then in the Privy Council Office for the War Committee of the Cabinet, then from 1949 – 1968 he was the Chairman of the Air Transport Board and then the Deputy Minister of Transport. Finally (if that wasn’t enough), he was the President of Air Canada from 1968 – 1974. My father has a PHD from Harvard University and spent his career as the Director of Economic Analysis at Statistics Canada. They both had

They both had passion for their education, knowledge and wisdom and I’ve spent my career chasing after goals that meant the world to me but would also make them proud.  They however both loved their families immensely and despite being workaholics also knew how to make time for their loved ones. Something that my grandmother and mother ensured always happened. I remember so many family dinners and to this day I am thankful for a great work ethic but know when family and friends need to be put first.

9. What do you consider to be a life well lived?

A life well lived is one full of adventure, happiness, positivity, hope and being able to say you make the lives of others around you better.

10. If you could write your own obituary, what would the tagline say?

She went confidently in the direction of her dreams and lived a life she always imagined.
