I’ve been a bridesmaid many times and for the most part, I just show up to the wedding, try to look cute, try not to sweat and try to be as helpful as possible to the bride.

Little did I know that behind-the-scenes, wedding planners like Kim Miyama, are running around, busy-as-bees making sure that everything is flawless, on time and on budget.

They have to deal with venues, catering, flowers, a staff, logistics plus a stressed out bride who wants her day to be perfect.

As the founder and principal planner of her own wedding and event planning company, Kim holds over a decade of experience in the hospitality industry, mainly as a wedding and high-profile corporate planner.

She’s been nominated for Top 30 Under 30 in Ontario, listed as a WedLuxe Glitterati Member, and has been a part of many outstanding corporate and social events.  

She works with clients from all over Canada and the world making their dreams for a perfect event a reality.  

We can clearly learn a thing or two from this very accomplished woman in business.

1. In the beginning, what motivated you to become an entrepreneur?

In the beginning, I think fear of failure motivated me the most. Failure is not an option nor in my vocabulary. Someone once told me “you are only as good as your last event” and it stayed with me because it’s true. You have to give the best every time or your events will suffer.  So I work tirelessly to make sure all my clients are happy and I exceed expectations every time.

2. What problem are you solving?

Planning an event can be very stressful, whether a wedding or a corporate gala. There are so many things you need to think about: budget, audio visual, the band’s rider, restrictions from the venue, dietary concerns, speeches, timing, etc.  We take that stress off the client and work with our trusted vendors to produce and execute beautiful events each and every time.

3. What’s the biggest thing you struggle with as an entrepreneur?

Work-life balance can be a struggle sometimes. You are your business, so there is no time off.

4. What does a typical day consist of?

I don’t really have a typical day. I always start my morning with a coffee and responding to emails/returning phone calls.  But then depending on what’s happening that day or week, I may be running around the city sourcing/pick up items for an upcoming event (i.e. mini steamer baskets for a place setting or cones for roasted chestnuts at a late night station), or my day could be filled with meetings and site visits, or I could be on site for days setting up and executing an event.  No one day is ever the same.

5. What do you love to do at night?

I love going out with girlfriends and trying a new restaurant in the city. It’s just nice to sit, relax and enjoy good company.

6. How do you dress to exude confidence?

The LBD — little black dress. I have so many and you can never go wrong with black.

7. Yoga, strength training, cardio or all three?

Strength training. I used to hate the gym but got into strength training about six months ago with Jen Lau @ Fit Squad and she changed my life.  I feel better, I sleep better, and it’s made me a stronger person, both mentally and physically.

8. How does your culture/background influence your work?

I come from a fairly strict Japanese family (I had a curfew until I was 21) so you could say that the stereotypical Japanese hard-work ethic rubbed off on me growing up.

I started working at 13 years old washing dishes and mopping the floor at a local coffee shop.  Not because I had to, but because I genuinely wanted to work and I wanted to make my own money and gain independence from my parents.

I guess in a way I was always striving to make something of myself, even from a very young age.

9. What do you consider to be a life well lived?

Being happy and having no regrets. I’m not a YOLO person, but I do believe in taking risks and taking a chance on yourself.  Some of greatest moments that have happened to me in my life so far happened because I took a chance, risked everything and went for it.

10. If you could write your own obituary, what would the tagline say?

Lived beautifully. Dreamed passionately. Loved completely.
